Our Mission Statement
The core objectives of the Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation are the relief of need, hardship, suffering and distress amongst the elderly and young persons. The Foundation's mission is to provide support, care and friendship to its client group and this is achieved through the provision of the following activities:-
In-House Visitors from throughout the county are entertained daily at the Foundation’s two houses on the edge of Leicestershire’s Charnwood Forest. They enjoy restful and supportive surroundings and benefit from the opportunity for social interaction and companionship. The visitors are comprised of individuals brought together in groups from the same area, with their partner or carer on a car day visit, or as a member of an organised support group, residential home or association.
Special Care Days & Craft Workshops. The former offer the opportunity to visit the Foundation to visitors who are no longer able to look after themselves when out, whilst the latter, which are tailored to the needs of the individual visitor, provides an encouraging and friendly environment in which adults of all ages with disabilities can develop their skills, dexterity and mobility through a number of craft projects.
Men Only Days allow men who are widowed, suffer from disabilities or illness and are lonely / isolated to mix with others whose circumstances are similar. The group provides the opportunity for male social interaction, to enjoy games such as dominoes and cards and to have fun. Recent activities at the group have been scalextric racing, snooker and radio controlled cars.
The Foundation’s Outside Visiting Scheme, which has primarily a befriending role, provides a listening ear and advice to those who are unable to visit the Foundation. The team of three outside visitors covers a wide area of north Leicestershire and they access their clients through referrals from a variety of sources.
A Free Mobility Aid loan scheme which provides a selection of items, including electric buggies, push wheelchairs and a small selection of walking frames and aids, on free indefinite loan.
The walks, pathways, sensory garden and wheelchair accessible bird hide that the Foundation has installed within its grounds are used by our daily visitors, additional visiting groups of elderly and disabled adults, painters, photographers and both mainstream and special schools. An electric golf buggy has also been provided to allow access to these facilities for our less mobile visitors.
The Foundation's ongoing aim is to develop and expand its facilities and work for the benefit of an even wider section of the Leicestershire community including the provision of educational activities for the young.
Fundraising Events
During each calendar year the Foundation organises and runs a variety of fundraising activities and events.
Over the years these have included Proms Nights, Victorian Garden Parties, Coffee Mornings, Concerts on the Lawn and a Flower Festival as well as the Foundation’s own annual Quiz, Scarecrow Walk and monthly 200 Club Draw.
Fundraising income is extremely important to the long term development of the Foundation and your attendance and support at any of our events is gratefully welcomed and appreciated.
To view a list of forthcoming events click on News and Events and to be placed on our mailing list just email the Foundation using the contact us form or telephone 01530 244914.
Walks, Painting, Photography, Bird Watching and the Sensory Garden
The Foundation’s walks are open to all of our in-house visitors at both the Grange and the Manor. In addition other groups and individuals wishing to enjoy these beautiful pathways and sensory garden or to paint, draw or photograph the wonderful views can do so Mon – Fri 10.00am – 4.00pm by prior appointment only. (There would be no access to either house on these visits but visitors would be welcome to bring there own refreshments)
Toilet facilities suitable for people with disabilities are available at the wood yard car park end of the woodland walk. All of the pathways are designed to be wheelchair friendly, although certain sections may contain inclines, involve a short walk along the Manor drive and the crossing of Priory Lane. We therefore advise all users to take care, make use of any rest points and only travel as far as they feel able.
Woodbank Walk: Between Ulverscroft Grange and the Manor’s wood yard car park, 736 yds long with 11 benches along its route. Wonderful views, inclined with zig zags in parts.
Car parking at both ends of walk.
Barclay Lane: Short wooded path between the Manor drive and the Woodland Walk. Peaceful calm area with 1 bench.
Woodland Walk: Situated at the Manor. 300yds long around a small flight pond. Picnic tables, seating, toilet facilities and car park. Rest and relax in a haven of tranquillity.
The Foundation has an Electric Golf Buggy manned by a team of volunteer buggy drivers who take our less mobile visitors for trips along the walks.
Sensory Garden: Wonderful views over the forest and beyond to Leicester with 6 benches and a wide variety of sensory plants.
Bird Hide: Situated at the Ulverscroft Grange end of Woodbank Walk with access to car parking, the bird hide is available for use by prior appointment, seven days a week. With disabled access it can be used for bird watching, painting and photography.
The Foundation is also happy to host school groups (both mainstream and specialist) that would like to use the extensive grounds for educational visits. If you wish to discuss this further please telephone 01530 244914.
